Abstract

This study explores the integration of Islamic values in the leadership of school principals to create an effective school environment at SMP Muhammadiyah Payakumbuh. The background of this research is rooted in the crucial role of school leadership in shaping a school's effectiveness, particularly in Islamic-based institutions where moral and spiritual values are integral to educational practices. The research aims to analyze how Islamic values are integrated into the principal's leadership and to identify the impact of this integration on school effectiveness. Using a qualitative case study approach, data were collected through in-depth interviews with the principal and stakeholders, participatory observation, and document analysis. The findings reveal that the principal successfully integrates Islamic values such as honesty (shiddiq), trustworthiness (amanah), exemplary behavior (qudwah), justice (‘adl), and social responsibility (takaful ijtima’i) into their leadership practices. Strategies include leading religious activities, serving as a role model, implementing Islamic-based programs, and fostering collaboration with parents and the community. The integration of these values has significantly enhanced school effectiveness, as evidenced by improved discipline among students and staff, higher academic achievement, a stronger Islamic school culture, and harmonious relationships among stakeholders. This study concludes that leadership grounded in Islamic values plays a pivotal role in creating an effective school environment. The findings contribute to the theoretical understanding of value-based leadership in Islamic education and offer practical recommendations for school principals and Islamic educational institutions. For future research, it is recommended to explore supporting and inhibiting factors in integrating Islamic values into school leadership and to conduct comparative studies across different Islamic schools. This research underscores the importance of aligning leadership practices with Islamic values to achieve holistic and effective educational outcomes.
